DYLAN

The sun was rising over the east side of the lake, though most of its rays were blocked out by the thick fog that had settled over Laudinboro and her surroundings in the past hours. The lake water was clear and blue, blending almost seamlessly into the fog. The surface was undisturbed, crystalline, like a mirror. A shadow sat on a bench on the west side of the lake, trying to clear her mind after yet another emotionally wrenching night.

She was tempted to move to the edge of the water, but she withstood the urge. She had made the same mistake several times before. She hated herself for existing, and even moreso for making the desicions she did because she didn't want to exist. After nights like these, her reflection was one she couldn't stand to look at.

Instead, she pulled up the sleeves of her sweater, looking at the wounds that interrupted her smooth skin. Two on her left, one on her right. The fingers of her right hand moved to her neck, tracing another, identical wound. She closed her eyes, letting herself relive the moments of that fourth bite. She loved the feelings that came with the loss of blood: the dizziness, the disorientation, and finally the numbness. That was all she really wanted. The numbness that came with being caught up in the magic of the lights and music of Club Skunk. She had been so close tonight.

But why did death never accept her? What purpose did she have to fulfill in life? She felt so confused. She wanted it to be over, but it felt like she was stuck in this life, unable to continue. She felt a sudden onset of sorrow for the vampires she let feed off her; they might never move on. They might forever be stuck on earth.

Alex had been walking forever and she felt close to helpless. She was tired, hungry, and the sun was beating down on her. She had not feed in a week and it was taking its tole on her. She clutched her teddy tight as she ran through the maze of trees crying uncontrollably. The branches grasped for her blond curls tangling then together and untying her black hair ribbon. She was filthy, her blue dress wrinkled and tattered from her hardship in the wilderness. Her white underskirt stained brown from running through mud, her black dress shoes caked with clay.

She was a mess all around and like most vampires she hated when she did not look her best, what was worse was she was trapped in this child form, never to age and she was on her own again. She had bee around for more then 100 years and she had learned from this time that she could not survive on her own. Why she was made was true at heart but it was a foolish move on her creators part, and it caused her own death. Trying to save Alex from slayers she had her own life taken forcing the poor girl to wonder the world alone and helpless.

Now that her caretaker was dead the mortal woman she was forced to run again and look for a new home. Her legs hurt as she continued to run, for three days she had run with little rest trying to reach whatever place she could. She was helpless out in the sunlight trying to hide in patches of shade. She was not fairing well in the sun and she feared that her life would end in these seemingly endless woods.

She rached a clearing and looked into the distance to see water. Finally she collapsed to the ground and let out a frustrated cry and whimpered, "Toby, i don't know what to do, can't anyone help me please. I can't do this on my own." She looked at the bear and cried harder, "You are never any help Toby, I can't trust you, you stupid toy. A child's play thing that is all you are. So then why is it I look to you when I know in my old age that you can not talk back. I may look like a child small and helpless but I know more than any toy ever can. Toby why?"

She whipped tears from her eyes and stood up, her legs feeling a little shaky. She continued to walk along whimpering and wishing she would have stayed in that empty mansion where her dead caretaker once live, she wished she had never been turned nor born. With a little hope she looked up with her blue eyes shimmering in the light and cried out, "Can anybody hear me, I need help, please." She knew someone had to be around, she could hear something or someone in the distance, a heartbeat was all she had to follow, but then again it could just as well be an animal of some sort.

At first, Dylan restrained from turning to find the source of the faint voice that had been muttering something inaudible. The sun was beginning to rise, so she doubted it was an immortal predator looking for a quick drink. More likely, it was a human, perhaps even someone she went to school with. If that were the case, she would be ridiculed as soon as the person saw her. She had been a source of sour jokes and ill-tempered remarks ever since she had dropped out (though her parents still didn't know). Surprisingly, there was a good number of people from the high school that knew about her nightly escapades. Most of them scorned her for associating with that "crowd," but every now and then, she would see a familiar face among the dancers at the club. Goddamn hypocrites.

When she heard the same voice cry for help, Dylan finally turned her head and squinted through the fog. She could tell that the blurry figure was a child, but from that distance, she couldn't decipher whether it was a girl or a boy. Even so, she stood, knowing she was not in danger; never before had she crossed a child vampire. She had assumed there was some kind of morality preventing it.

She walked toward the child, and as she got closer, she saw that it was a young girl, coated in a layer of dust and dirt, her curls tangled, and her elegant blue dress tattered and torn. Despite her poor state, Dylan still felt hideous next to her, in her black sweatshirt and jeans. She knew that this young girl could clean up to be beautiful, which was more than Dylan could say of herself.

"Hey," Dylan said, "What's wrong?" She tried to make her voice comforting, but it probably didn't work. She never really got on with children. Most were afraid of her.

As Dylan got even closer, she was able to decipher that the young girl, was, in fact, a vampire. She felt an onset of both fear and pity; fear because even a child vampire would be able to torture her slowly, and pity because she was frozen that way forever. She stopped in her tracks, waiting to see if the immortal girl had any plans to attack.

Alex saw a girl up ahead, that was good for her since her years of immortal life had trained her that men were not to loving but rather cruel thinking of only one thing, something she could not give them. She ran faster letting tears run down her face, her teddy under her arm. She didn't know why she was crying now, she had found people, people meant vampires, vampires meant hopefully an new home. She would never survive alone, even a human became the difference between life and death to her.

It was all because of her cursed form, her eternal child form, she would always depend on others, this would never change. She slowed down as she got closer and soon came to a full stop only a few feet from her. She envied the girl, she was young but she was still older then her appearing age. She wished she could have been her age, or the look of her age. She had always wondered if she would have been a beautiful woman.

She felt the sun rising up behind her, she was out of the shade and she had not feed for so long. Normally the sun just made her feel sick and slow but at her level now, her weakened state, it would wreck havoc on her. She looked behind her at the orange orb rising into the sky and let out a hiss, it hurt her eyes, it hurt her skin. She looked back at the girl with fear in her eyes and whimpered, "Can you help me, I am lost and Toby and I can't find a home." She brought her teddy up to her face and rested it under her left cheek. "Anna didn't wake up, she went away like all humans do, I was not safe and i can't live on my own. I was turned to young, I need others, can you help me find them?"

She tried her hardest to sound very childish for she did not want to confuse the girl with Old English nor sound older then her. She realized that people saw her as a seven year old girl and it was hard to comprehend. They always saw her young age and assumed they knew more then her, even if she was the wiser. She had even outsmarted other vampires, mostly the younger ones who were at the simple age of 90 or so.

Dylan watched the poor thing come closer to her, her strides obviously not taken in aggressive hunger, but rather, a sort of fear and necessity. Dylan turned to look at the sun when the girl hissed. It was a bad situation; the heat of the sun was beginning to peirce the fog, and within the hour, the fog will have dispersed. She could tell the vampire child was weak, and she would not last long in the sun.

Dylan quickly tried to think of the places where vampires might be. The Java Bean Cafe, where the Lafayettes usually were, was nearly always crowded, but it wasn't exactly closed off from the sun. Even the amount of sunlight the windows would let in might be able to harm the girl. Club Skunk, the hangout of Ashen and Delmos, was dark, but humans were there during the day. She would hardly go unnoticed. She didn't even dare consider the Black Horse Bar. Neither of them would last long there, among the Kramos.

The only other place Dylan could think of was the Underground of Club Skunk. In the nighttime, it was a place of sexual play and terrible deeds, but in the daytime, when most vampires were long gone, asleep in their own place of darkness, what was the worst that could happen? They could easily sneak into the Underground from the back of the building, and thus go unnoticed.

"Okay," she replied, "I know a dark place, but there won't be any others there until tonight. But it will be safe there. And I'm not fast like you are, so we'll have to take my car. Is that alright?"

She held her bear tightly and replied with a meek voice, "Yes that is alright with me, I have only been in a car few times but it dose not bother me." When the girl had mentioned speed she realized for the first time in a long time that she was faster then the humans were. She remembered back before donors when she was a hunter that she could outrun her prey.

She walked closer to the girl and gave her a hug, feeling her childish urges take her over. Even with the mind of an adult she still acted rather childish, she believed it was because she had never had the hormone that takes you out of your childish days and into womanhood. No she was a child Eternally. All she wanted was to tell her everything, tell her story, but first she needed to get out of the sun. She could already feel it sing her skin.

Letting out another hiss as she sun became warmer on her back she cowered in the girls shadows to hide from its rays. She was afraid and all she could think of was her mothers voice. She could almost hear her speaking to her but it was all in her head, her longing for her, that was all it was. A child's longing for her creator, the one who made her like this. That was the past, the sunlight was now.

Dylan gave the child a small smile and began to walk in the direction of the lot, the sun at their back. She could only hope that the fog would last until they could be safely in the confines of the shadows.

Dylan felt a warmth creep through her soul when the girl wrapped her arms aound her. Never before had anyone shown her such gratitude. It was a strange thought, for Dylan hadn't ever considered not helping the child. It seemed like a thanks for something she had felt obligated to do in the first place. She watched the girl take refuge in her shadow, and for the first time in a long time, Dylan felt she had a purpose, if only one so small and unimportant.

The dark blue sedan, alone in the parking lot, shone in the weak rays of the sun, reminding Dylan of the impending threat that was still hovering so closely. She quickly made her way to the drivers side door, opening it and sliding in. By the time she closed the door, the girl was already in, as well. The sun was visible through the windshield, and as she noticed, Dylan swore and turned to search the backseat for something that could help. Finding the dark-colored blanket she used on the nights when she left the club early and slept in her car, she tossed it to the girl. Then, she shifted the car into reverse and pulled away...

[After you post, I'll continue it in the Underground.]

Alex took the blanket and put it over herself keeping the sun off her. She felt safe again and knew she was in good hands. She could feel the car moving, she could hear everything. Even with her heightened senses she had no way of knowing where they were going but she trusted this girl. Alex often times knew if someone meant her harm. That was why she was in this situation to begin with.

She wanted to tell this girl everything but she didn't feel it was the right time. She would hold out until she was safe and far away from the reaches of the sun. She didn't mind if she would get something to eat or if she would sleep, she was to excited to eat or sleep. She could not believe she made it. She escaped Albert and now he could never hurt her. She just wished that Anna had not had to die. She remained silent on the car ride, just being in a car mad her fell dizzy, she was not use to being in them and for some reason she always got slightly car sick.

continued in Out of the Sun.
